I would like to say I was a student of William "Bill" Gardo and found him to be an outstanding teacher and friend. He was a mentor that really believed in Isshinryu having studied in Okinawa under Master Tatsuo Shimabuku we is extremely missed since his passing. The man had a good heart and I remember him standing up for me when it really counted,

Dear Forrester Sensei,

I sincerely apologize if my posting offended you, this was not my intent.  Most Isshinryu students haven't heard of these first generation students and I was only mentioning their names.  These three continued to travel back to Okinawa and learn.  Thank you in advance for your understanding.

With respect,

Jim

I mention these students because they are the ones I am personally familiar with.

I just taught at the Okinawan Karate Union seminar here in Georgia this weekend with Grandmaster Harold Mitchum.  I'm not an Isshinryu practicioner anymore (since 1972) so pardon my ignorance.  In attendance were Hanshi LaRocco, Shihan Sonny Newman, Shihan Doyle Seiber, and Shihan Don Roberts (among others).

If you feel these people are important, start a discussion about them and their contributions to the system.  I'm sure that it will be interesting for everyone.

Above you mention "Most Notable Students".  Although, all of them had an important influence on Isshinryu, There are three others who I feel "understood" Isshinryu more.  They are; A.J. Advincula, Walt Van Gilson and Sherman Herrill.  Names some may not heard of.  Shimabuku Kichiro, (Tatsuo's eldest son) is the current head of the Isshinryu system.

Thanks for the info Eric I didn't know that about Shuri-Ryu and the inclusion of Wunsu.

My Sensei received two of her Dan ranks from Allen Wheeler. She has discussed the style of Isshin-Ryu with us in detail over the years and has taught many Isshin-Ryu forms to her students. I also trained for a couple years with a gentleman named David Brewer, in Odo Kempo Kobudo, who's empty hand style was Isshin-Ryu. It is said that Master Trias' inclusion of the Kata Wunsu into his Shuri-Ryu curriculum was as a tribute to Master Shimabuku. That is the reason it is called "Dragon Boy Form".

One of the most interesting Isshin-Ryu forms I have seen would be Seiunchin.

I'm not an Isshinryu player - I just work out with some of them. I used to study it long ago. Our kata are different from Isshinryu. Even Naihanchi Sho is vastly different from yours.

What's your favorite Isshinryu kata?
Mine is Chinto, I don't know I guess it just relaxes me
