Zayu No Mei Juichi Kajo The 11 mottoes of Sosai Oyama

The  11 Mottoes of Sosai Oyama combined with the Kyokushin dojo kun form the philosophical basis for Kyokushin karate.

  1. The martial way begins and ends with courtesy. Therefore, be properly and genuinely courteous at all time.
  2. Following the martial way is like scaling a cliff, continue upwards without rest. It demands absolute and unfaltering devotion to the task at hand.
  3. Strive to seize the initiative in all…

Kyokushin Dojo Kun written by Sosai Oyama with the assistance of Eji Yoshikawa author of Musashi

We will train our hearts and bodies for a firm unshaking spirit. We will pursue the true meaning of the marital way so that in time our senses may be alert. With true vigour we will seek to cultivate a spirit of self-denial.We will observe the rules of courtesy, respect our superiors, and refrain from violence. We will follow our religious principles and never forget the true virtue of humility. We will look upwards to wisdom and strength, not seeking other desires. All our lives through the…

ARMY COMBATIVE - HAND TO HAND COMBAT

To simplify the explanations all cut-n-thrust angle numbers are taken directly from the "9 angles of attack" in Khukuri (Nepali Knife).

They are simply reference of cut or thrust direction nothing more.

1) Cut from the draw.

2) Thrust from the draw.

3) The on guard stance.

4) Slashes or cuts from the guard stance.

5) Thrusts from the guard stance.

Feeling of the Dojo

I don't know if this is good or not. I don't know if I should have a different mind for when I enter the dojo, but I'm being honest with my feelings today.

When I enter the dojo, I feel invincible. The person I am outside of the dojo dissappears and this part priest, part warrior who is one with the universe takes his place. And I'm amongst other surreal beings too. We breathe, expand, and contract all feeling one with the universe and with each other.

This feeling lingers…

EFFICIENCY

Its very interesting to me when I see a JKD site try and get dogmatic with certain principles that Bruce Lee discussed in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do.   It's an attempt to turn JKD into another fixed style with a harden doctrine.
Sometimes you will see JKD described as adhering to certain rules as if these rules are some irrefutable gospel. Rules like: Simplicity, Economy of Motion, Longest Weapon to the Nearest Target, etc...   Unfortunately, this does JKD a disservice and…

This Thanksgiving

Most of the time I'll do a bit of blogging at my music or FB "spaces." This time I want to share something from some readings I came across that hopefully some would like here at Warrior Pages.

It is from Buddhist and Zen compilations, and coincidentally, from lessons I learned from those wonderful Nuns who put up with me as a bratty kid.

So, on this Thanksgiving Holiday here is my contribution.

I Know I'm A "Modern" Warrior...

I enter the dojo. A deep sense of peace quickly envelopes me. I take a weapon from the wall and begin a series of movements.  I move faster and faster lost in the moment. Soon, I'm no longer manipulating the weapon, it's leading me. It moves and I follow.  Through these movements, I begin to sense my master calling to me...oh wait, it's my cell phone.  It is my master. Only it’s not a call but a text, she's caught in traffic & I should meet her at Starbuck's after I workout. Cool! Now…

Korea: Land of the Morning Calm

Annyeong haseyo? This is a common greeting throughout the entire nation of South Korea. It literally translates to: "Are you at peace?" No other greeting could be more appropriate for the people of "the Land of the Morning Calm", a name also as fitting for this country. Unfortunately, most of us in the western world know very little about this country, its people, its customs, and its rich history. This brings me to the question which was most commonly asked to me once I announced my…

I Know I'm a "Modern" Warrior...

A gathering of warriors has assembled to watch a battle of two champions. The champions glare at one another and the tension mounts. At a given signal, the combatents engage. The battle rages for what seems a very long time. Finally, one warrior begins to gain the upper hand. As one warrior becomes stronger the other becomes weaker. The match gets bloodier and bloodier. Finally, one of the gathered warriors speak up... "Ok, change the channel, this is getting gross." "Are you kidding? I paid 50… Continue

I Know I'm a "Modern" Warrior...

Finally, after years of training, a private lesson with a great master. A master renowned around the world for his exceptional knowledge. A chance to garner the combined wisdom of centuries of martial arts training. It was a glorious session until finally I reached an impasse. I could no longer fathom what the master was trying to teach me. I mused on my sudden loss of comprehension, when suddenly it all became crystal clear. The damn dvd was scratched.

Why You Should Train With a White Belt

As an adult intermediate or advanced ranking practitioner of the martial arts, you probably find yourself gravitating towards those of a similar rank whenever your instructor tells you to “find a partner” during class. While working with someone of an equal or higher rank is beneficial to your training, so is working with someone of a much lower rank, especially white belts. Now, before I continue, there is one important thing that you must do prior to pairing off with a white belt: Check your… Continue
